Cannes Film Festival (France)

Also known as the Cannes International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival is an annual event held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, in the resort town of Cannes, South France. It is usually held every May, but changes in the date arise sometimes for varying reasons. It was founded in 1946 and is considered as the most prestigious film festival in the world. The Cannes Film Festival showcases a very wide range of films from various places around the world. It features European Films, Culture Films from various regions, and others that launched the careers of numerous directors and filmmakers. It exhibits various film genres, documentaries, short films, animations, and many others. The highest completion prize at the Festival is the Palme d’Or or the Golden Palm award given to the best film.

 

Edinburgh International Film Festival (UK)

Considered as the world’s oldest continually running film festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival was first held in 1947 and continues to be held annually every August. The annual slot of the festival changed in 2008 when it was moved from August to June. The EIFF showcase UK films and international film premiers and aims to exhibit the works of various filmmakers across the globe. The festival showcases various kinds of films ranging from full- length films and documentary to short films, animation, and music videos. Over the years, the festival expanded its scope and included experimental films, fiction films and documentary. The event is held in various venues in the UK including Cameo, Fountainpark, Edinburgh Festival Theater, and the Dominion Cinema, among others.

 

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Czech Republic)

One of Europe’s major film festivals, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is annually held in July at Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The festival’s history dates backs tom 1946 when a dream of creating a festival of films among seven countries was materialized before war broke out. Through the years the festival has included various sections in its programs, including the Competition of feature-length films, Documentary Film Competition, Horizons, Another View, Forums of Independents, East of the West, Czech Films, and Retrospectives. Since 1951, films included in the festival is reviewed and evaluated by an international jury. The highest award in the festival is the Grand Prix- Crystal Globe for best feature film.
